Addressing the Root Causes of Conflict and Injustice
The Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Torit (JPC-CDoT) works to build a just and peaceful society across Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan. Guided by Catholic Social Teaching, we address the root causes of conflict and injustice through five key thematic areas of work.
From strengthening Parish Justice and Peace Committees to advocating for human rights and environmental protection, our programs empower communities, heal divisions, and promote good governance.
We work to heal divisions and build lasting peace through:
-
Strengthening Parish Justice and Peace Committees – Building the capacity of parish-level committees so they can lead peace efforts, mediate disputes, and respond to local tensions in their own communities.
-
Women's Empowerment for Peace – Equipping women with skills, confidence, and platforms to take active leadership roles in peace building and community reconciliation.
-
Youth Empowerment for Peace – Engaging young people in positive peace activities, leadership training, and livelihood opportunities that steer them away from violence and idleness.
-
Cross-Border Peace Dialogue – Bringing together communities from across state and national borders to resolve shared conflicts, especially over grazing land and water, through dialogue and shared agreements.
-
Peace Dividends Activities with Agro-pastoralist Communities – Supporting practical projects that show communities the tangible benefits of peace, such as shared water points, farming support, and joint community initiatives.
-
Community Peace Dialogue – Facilitating open conversations among community members, elders, and leaders to resolve grievances, rebuild trust, and find common solutions to local conflicts.
-
Peace Building Skills Training – Training community members, leaders, and youth in conflict analysis, mediation, negotiation, and early warning so they can prevent and manage conflict themselves.
-
Formation of Peace Committees – Establishing and supporting local peace committees that serve as trusted, neutral bodies for resolving disputes and promoting harmony.
-
Trauma Healing Sessions – Providing safe spaces and support for individuals and communities affected by violence, helping them heal from trauma and rebuild their lives.
-
Sensitization on the Revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS) – Educating communities on the contents and importance of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan, so citizens can participate in and hold leaders accountable to the peace process.
We promote transparent and accountable leadership through:
-
Civic Education – Teaching citizens about their rights, responsibilities, and the role of government, so they can participate meaningfully in public life and hold leaders accountable.
-
Training of Boma Council – Equipping Boma Council members with the knowledge and skills they need to govern fairly, resolve local disputes, and serve their communities effectively.
-
Capacity Building for Boma Councils – Strengthening the structures, systems, and skills of Boma Councils so they can plan, manage resources, and deliver services transparently and responsibly.
We empower communities to know and claim their rights through:
-
Community Security and Human Rights Education – Raising awareness among communities about their rights to safety and security, how to protect themselves, and how to report abuses. This program helps people understand the link between security, human rights, and peace, and empowers them to demand protection and accountability from authorities.
-
Paralegal Training – Training community members as paralegals so they can provide basic legal information, support, and referral services to people in their areas. Trained paralegals help citizens understand their rights, navigate legal processes, and access justice, especially where formal legal services are limited.
We protect the rights and dignity of vulnerable people through:
-
Gender Awareness – Promoting understanding of gender equality and the different challenges faced by women, men, girls, and boys, and encouraging communities to treat all people with dignity and respect.
-
Gender Based Violence (GBV) Prevention – Working to prevent and respond to gender-based violence through awareness campaigns, community dialogue, survivor support, and referral to services.
-
Child Rights – Educating communities on the rights of children to protection, education, health, and a safe environment, and advocating for the protection of children from abuse, exploitation, and violence.
-
Legal Rights Awareness – Helping people understand their legal rights and how to claim them, so they can protect themselves and seek justice when their rights are violated.
-
Rights of Older People – Advocating for the dignity, care, and protection of older people, and raising awareness of their rights within families and communities.
-
Legal Representation – Providing legal support and representation for vulnerable people who cannot afford legal services, so they can access justice fairly.
-
Prison & Detention Visiting – Visiting prisons and detention centers to monitor conditions, provide support to detainees, and advocate for fair treatment and the rights of those in detention.
