About Us

During the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), Pope John XXIII and the bishops from around the world decided that the Church needed to be more involved in the world.

They established a Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace and directed all bishops to establish Justice and Peace commissions in their own Dioceses.

Today, this work is grouped under integral human development alongside health and education.

In 1995, the Justice and Peace Commission, Catholic Diocese of Torit (JPC-CDoT) was formed to promote justice and peace action in the light of Catholic Social Teachings as an integral part of the evangelizing mission of the Church in the Catholic Diocese of Torit.

JPC-CDoT is a registered Faith-Based Organization with the Relief & Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) under Chapter 3, Section 10 of the South Sudan NGOs Act 2016.

A just and peaceful society across Eastern Equatoria State.

• To promote, enhance, and facilitate peace and reconciliation processes in the communities.

• To educate the communities about the dangers of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in their hands to disarm their minds.

• To work together with community leaders to change the attitudes and behaviors of the youth toward cattle raiding to promote community cohesion and development.

• To work integrally with the diocesan pastoral programmes and actors for peace, unity and harmony.

• To promote the rule of law, good governance, and dialogue to resolve community conflict.

• To raise awareness among people about the causes of suffering and poverty, and to recognize the social implications of faith.

• To empower people to work for a more just society where the basic rights of all people for food, water, shelter, education, employment, healthcare, and political and civil participation are respected.

• To assist the Church in preaching and promoting action for Justice and Peace in support of the poor, marginalized, disadvantaged, and oppressed.

• To promote the integration of the social teaching of the Catholic Church into the total faith formation of the Parish Community.

• To provide a process for an internal change of heart.

• To respect the dignity of human life in all its stages.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Torit serves as Chairman of the Board. Other Board members are constituted by the Bishop from time to time.
